When two former
presidents (Jack Lemmon and James Garner) find
themselves in the center of a brewing political scandal, they find that
they're best defense is to team up and go after the crooked incumbent
(Dan Aykroyd).
Two aging U.S. ex-Presidents, Republican Russell P. Kramer (Jack Lemmon) and Democrat Matt Douglas (James Garner) must overcome their political differences and personal loathing for each other and team up to stop oily current Commander-in-Chief William Haney (Dan Aykroyd) from having them killed. The whole mess begins when a kickback scandal emerges. Wanting to conceal his own dirty hands, Haney decides to blame it all on Kramer and have both him and Douglas killed. Long-time rivals Kramer and Douglas are reunited when they are boarded upon a helicopter bound for an important funeral. Neither one knows that the 'copter is scheduled to have an inexplicable accident. Fortunately, the two curmudgeons escape, and that's when they decide to work together to find the evidence they need to impeach Haney. While the film sounds like it ought to be a political thriller, it is actually a comedy, and both Lemmon and Garner seem to have a grand old time exchanging salty zingers.
